Criders around the World

On his blog, John Scalzi mentioned a website, Forebears.io, where you can see how many people share your surname and how they're distributed around the world.  Naturally I had to give it a try.  It turns out that there are about 11,938 Criders in the world and that 11,892 of them live in the United States.  There's one Crider in Bangladesh, and there are 14 in Canada, with 9 in Australia and 7 in Argentina.   And that's the story of the Criders around the World.

Judy's surname, Stutts, is far less common.  Only 4363 of those, and all but 5 live in the U.S.  The outliers are in Canada.

Pfeifers are concentrated mostly in Germany, which isn't a surprise. There are a bunch a variant spellings--and I think I've received mail addressed to me with every single one of them!

Most Houses (45,274) are in the US, followed by Bangladesh (10,657), and England (9,040). Bangladesh..who knew?

Tell the Bangladesh Houses to say "hey" to the Crider there. By the way, there's a House Street in Alvin, Texas, no doubt named for a famous member of your ancestry.

Engvall/Engwall: 2,455 worldwide, of which 2,139 in Sweden. And while can understand there's one in Norway and one in Denmark, the fact there's one in Kyrgyzstan is surprising to say the least.

There are 305 in the US, and of them is Texas comedian Bill Engvall (no relation).

According to THE OXFORD ETYMOLOGICAL GUIDE TO TEXAS NAMES, "Crider" comes from the pre-celtic, meaning "Disgruntled Postal Worker."

That explains a lot.

There are 34,547 Napiers worldwide with 20, 252 in the US. Oddly, only 1,444 are in Scotland, where the name originated. We are a far-flung lot, though. Australia, Russia, Brazil, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, the Philippines, and one each in Viet Nam and Argentina. And that ain't all.

Crider probably has a lot of variants, like Kreider, and that would boost up the total.

True, Cap'n. I think someone changed the name after arriving here, which would explain why we're nearly all in the U.S.

Almost 80% of the 13,000+ Coffin folks are in the US, and most of the rest are in Canada or France or England. "Coffin," of course, means a small decorated chest (i.e., he same meaning as "casket," although the web site returns only 40 of them world-wide, 16 in the UK, 8 in Russia, and 8 in the US). My branch of the family came to England with William the C., and sailed for the US around 1620.
