While they were touring as Bob Dylan and The Band in 1965-66, I doubt it was the same group on the charts.

Here is the NYC top 10, 12/22/65:

1 2 WE CAN WORK IT OUT / DAY TRIPPER - The Beatles
2 1 TASTE OF HONEY - Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
3 9 THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE - Simon & Garfunkel
4 3 TURN! TURN! TURN! (To Everything There Is A Season) - The Byrds
5 7 DON’T THINK TWICE - The Wonder Who?
6 5 OVER AND OVER - The Dave Clark Five
7 4 I GOT YOU (I Feel Good) - James Brown & The Famous Flames
8 23 AS TEARS GO BY - The Rolling Stones
9 10 A MUST TO AVOID - Herman’s Hermits
10 21 SHE’S JUST MY STYLE - Gary Lewis & The Playboys

For a totally local hit, not only in New York but local to this station alone, there was dj Harry Harrison's "May You Always," with him talking various New Year wishes for the audience while "Old Lang Syne" plays in the background. Harrison later worked many years at the bigger WABC and ended his career with oldies station WCBS-FM. where he continued to play "May You Always" every year. (This week it was #20.)

The original version of "May You Always".

Other big jumps this week:
Barbara Ann by The Beach Boys from 56 to 25
It Was a Very Good Year by Frank Sinatra from 52 to 24

Thanks for the link. I'll always think of the McGuire sisters when I hear that title, though.

I Got You, James Brown and the Famous Flames
Let's Hang On, The Four Seasons (featuring the Sound of Frankie Valli)
I Hear a Symphony, The Supremes
I Can Never Go Home Anymore, The Shangri-Las
Make the World Go Away, Eddie Arnold
England Swings, Roger Miller
Fever, The McCoys
I Will, Dean Martin

Eddie Arnold and Dean Martin both in the Top Ten? Take that, hippies!

Make the World Go Away? Isn't that your motto, Bill?

Sometimes I think it wouldn't be a bad idea.

"The Men in My Little Girl's Life" by Mike Douglas. THE Mike Douglas??

/The title of that song makes me think it would really be sappy.

Unknown said...

Yes, that's the Mike Douglas, and the song is just as sappy as you can imagine. Maybe sappier.

Eddie Arnold, Dean Martin, AND Roger Miller...

Jeff Meyerson said...

Very sappy, Deb.

Cap'n Bob said...

Not just sappy, but uncomfortably suggestive.

Apparently this "The Band" was a Tulsa, Oklahoma group. Which explains their popularity on the Tulsa charts.

Thanks. That sounds right.
