John Hurt, R. I. P.

Hollywood Reporter: John Hurt, the esteemed British actor known for his burry voice and weathered visage — one that was kept hidden for his most acclaimed role, that of the deformed John Merrick in David Lynch’s The Elephant Man — has died, according to reports from several British newspapers. He was 77.

Lot of actors dying off lately. Loved John Hurt-The Shout, Alien, Elephant Man.

Can't believe they didn't mention what to me was his first role that made a big impression here, Quentin Crisp in THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT. And his Caligula in I, CLAUDIUS was scary.

Jeff beat me to the Quintin Crisp reference. That's the first time I remember seeing him.

He first impressed me as the perjurer who sealed Sir Thomas More's fate in the brilliant but now nearly forgotten "A Man For All Seasons".

I remember the young Hurt in A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS and SINFUL DAVY. Do I feel old.

I almost mentioned John Huston's "Sinful Davy myself, Fred. It's a guilty pleasure of mine. It's minor Huston but Hurt is charming in it.

He freaked me out as Caligula in I, CLAUDIUS. I was 13 at the time.
A lost gem of his is THE HIT from 1984.
